Be Equal

Hi guys, sorry its been forever since I’ve written anything, but you know, school and life have gotten the best of me. Anyways…

I was recently shown this video of a speech given by, as someone told me, “The Queen,” Emma Watson, on gender equality and Feminism. Usually I steer clear of topics like this and turn away when faced with the awkward topic of politics or gender, yet this speech empowered me to see from a different point of view.

By definition, a feminist: advocates social, political, legal, and economic rights for women equal to man.

Now to me, that doesn’t seem limited to only women. Any man who believes women to be equal could also consider himself a feminist and could help seek equality for women. This speech is supposed to empower both men and women to want equal rights for each other regardless of gender. Men shouldn’t be embarrassed to show emotion and women shouldn’t feel muted on topics that they’re passionate about. Our world is constantly at tension between the word feminism and the actual meaning behind it. Its okay to hate the word itself, but its not the word that makes the movement, its the action and its the meaning behind it. Change the word if it makes you feel better, but ultimately the message of equality stays the same.

Take 13 minutes out of your day to watch, in my opinion, one of the best and well addressed speeches by such a confident and modestly impressive individual.

When Life Hands You Lemons, Be Equal.
